2014 Michael Barnes Award Recipient is Steven Williams

On October 30, 2014, Legal Aid of Western Michigan presented the annual Michael Barnes Award to Steven Williams for his exemplary contributions toward the provision of free legal service to the poor and elderly in Western Michigan.

Steve attended Wayne State University where he received his Juris Doctorate degree in 1978. Steve held numerous law-related positions in Idaho, Minnesota and Washington, D.C. before returning to his roots in Grand Rapids.

Steve was a staff attorney at Legal Aid of Western Michigan in the mid 80s and was the Director of the Pro Bono Program from 1984 - 1987. Since then he has been in private practice, most recently concentrating his efforts in the area of family law. Legal services to the poor remains near and dear to Steve's heart as demonstrated by his steadfast commitment to the Pro Bono Program. He has accepted more than 70 cases and donated well over 700 hours of time to the Program.

In addition to him being honored as the recipient of the Michael Barnes Award, Steve has also received the prestigious State Bar of Michigan John W. Cummiskey Award for his outstanding pro bono work.
