On October 30, 2014, Legal Aid of Western Michigan presented the annual Michael Barnes Award to Steven Williams for his exemplary contributions toward the provision of free legal service to the poor and elderly in Western Michigan.
Jack Keiser served on the Board of Legal Aid of Southwestern Michigan with John Vlachos in the early 90s. In addition to his service on the board, he also handled numerous cases through the Pro Bono Program and donated hundreds of hours of time. Jack has been a longtime supporter of Legal Aid and its mission in equal access to justice.
After serving as Interim Director since November 2013, Juan Salazar has been appointed as Executive Director of Legal Aid of Western Michigan.
On April 17th, LSC was honored to co-host a White House forum on the state of civil legal assistance. The two-hour event featured spirited discussion by a diverse group of national leaders and directors of LSC-funded legal aid programs.

The ACLU of Michigan’s Southwest Branch will host a public forum on September 28th at the Douglass Community Center at 1000 West Paterson Street, Kalamazoo, MI, from 7:00pm-8:30pm on the school-to-prison pipeline’s impact on students in Kalamazoo. Students and parents of students are encouraged to attend as the topic of conversation will center on students’ rights and responsibilities pertaining to suspensions and expulsions. A partner with the Varnum Law firm who has volunteered more than 1500 hours of her time through Legal Aid's Pro Bono Program was the honored guest at the annual event at the BOB on October 28.
Lori Rumsey, long-time secretary to Judge William Welty, St. Joseph county District Judge, is this year's recipient of the John N. Vlachos award.
